    On Religious Skepticism.J. L. Schellenberg - 2020 - International Journal for the Study of Skepticism 10 (3-4):268-282.
I seek to promote a fuller understanding of religious skepticism by defending five theses. These concern, respectively: its breadth, discussed in relation to theism on the one hand and naturalism on the other; why it should be distinguished from a general metaphysical skepticism; how it is supported by the consequences of recent cultural evolution, which at the same time enable new and stronger arguments for atheism; the relations it bears to non-doxastic religious faith; and, finally, its curious capacity in (...)

Interactive Activation and Mutual Constraint Satisfaction in Perception and Cognition.James L. McClelland, Daniel Mirman, Donald J. Bolger & Pranav Khaitan - 2014 - Cognitive Science 38 (6):1139-1189.
In a seminal 1977 article, Rumelhart argued that perception required the simultaneous use of multiple sources of information, allowing perceivers to optimally interpret sensory information at many levels of representation in real time as information arrives. Building on Rumelhart's arguments, we present the Interactive Activation hypothesis—the idea that the mechanism used in perception and comprehension to achieve these feats exploits an interactive activation process implemented through the bidirectional propagation of activation among simple processing units. We then examine the interactive activation (...)

    Zen Diary. [REVIEW]B. L. J. - 1971 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (1):138-139.
Here we go again--yet another testimony of disaffection with the western religious and philosophical tradition by a western philosopher who thinks he has found the answer to mankind's deepest longings and questionings in the "mystic east." He writes a somewhat verbose treatise on the transition from the state of confusion in the realm of language to the state of clarity in the realm of silence. Why is it that those who assert a firm belief in the benefit of remaining silent, (...)

Rediscovering Fuller: Essays on Implicit Law and Institutional Design.W. J. Witteveen & Wibren van der Burg - 1999 - Amsterdam University Press.
Lon Fuller, one of the great American jurists of this century, is often remembered only for his stand on the morality of law in the Fuller-Hart debate. Rediscovering Fuller considers the full range of Fuller's writings, from his early engagement with legal fictions and his critique of legal positivism to his later work on implicit law and the art of institutional design. Contributors from the fields of both civil law and common law argue that Fuller's (...)

    Reframing Medicine’s Publics: The Local as a Public of Vaccine Refusal.Heidi Y. Lawrence, Bernice L. Hausman & Clare J. Dannenberg - 2014 - Journal of Medical Humanities 35 (2):111-129.
Although medical and public health practitioners aim for high rates of vaccination, parent vaccination concerns confound doctors and complicate doctor-patient interactions. Medical and public health researchers have studied and attempted to counter antivaccination sentiments, but recommended approaches to dispel vaccination concerns have failed to produce long-lasting effects. We use observations made during a small study in a rural area in a southeastern state to demonstrate how a shift away from analyzing vaccination skepticism as a national issue with a global remedy (...)

An ethics of anthropology‐informed community engagement with COVID‐19 clinical trials in Africa.Sarah J. L. Edwards, Blessing Silaigwana, Danny Asogun, Julius Mugwagwa, Francine Ntoumi, Rashid Ansumana, Kevin Bardosh & Jennyfer Ambe - 2023 - Developing World Bioethics 23 (3):242-251.
The COVID‐19 pandemic has reinforced the critical role of ethics and community engagement in designing and conducting clinical research during infectious disease outbreaks where no vaccine or treatment already exists. In reviewing current practices across Africa, we distinguish between three distinct roles for community engagement in clinical research that are often conflated: 1) the importance of community engagement for identifying and honouring cultural sensitivities; 2) the importance of recognising the socio‐political context in which the research is proposed; and 3) the (...)

As the most famous woman scientist of the twentieth century, there has been no shortage of books and articles on the life and career of Marie Curie . Her role as a director of a laboratory-based research school in the new scientific field of radioactivity, a field which embraced both chemistry and physics, however, has never been examined. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the question of research schools, and Morrell, Ravetz, Geison, and Klosterman, amongst others, (...)

    Objectivity and truth in history.J. L. Gorman - 1974 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 17 (1-4):373 – 397.
Examples of historical writing are analysed in detail, and it is demonstrated that, with respect to the statements which appear in historical accounts, their truth and value-freedom are neither necessary nor sufficient for the relative acceptability of historical accounts. What is both necessary and sufficient is the acceptability of the selection of statements involved, and it is shown that history can be objective only if the acceptability of selection can be made on the basis of a rational criterion of relevance. (...)

Ninth Circuit Holds Physician Joint Venture Liable for Anti-Kickback Violation.L. W. J. - 1995 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 23 (4):406-407.
Hanlester Network v. Shalala ) marks the first test of the application of the Medicare-Medicaid anti-kickback statute to physician self-referral joint ventures. The most recent development in this ongoing litigation was the April 6, 1995 decision of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, holding the Hanlester Network vicariously liable for its marketing vice president's knowing and willful violation of the antikickback statute. The vice president had offered to pay physician-investors in order to induce their referrals of program-related business. The Hanlester Network (...)

    The duality of the present.J. L. Martin - 1973 - Man and World 6 (3):293-301.
A reflection upon the experience of time reveals two data : An infinitely rapid flow of nows through the present, and the unmoving everpresence of the now in which I live. This all-pervasive duality of the present is implicit in many analyses of time, including Husse'rl's, but it needs to, be made ex- plicit. Although our data are, by the nature of the case, perfectly available for our inspection, their explication is not easy (as Augustine's frustration indicates). Consequently, the explication (...)

    Special Relativity, the Source of Electron Deep Orbits.J. L. Paillet & A. Meulenberg - 2017 - Foundations of Physics 47 (2):256-264.
In this paper, we explicitly point out the reasons why Special Relativity must be considered as the source of electron deep orbits, and dominates their behavior. We show that the cause is the quadratic form of the relativistic expression of energy, and this clearly appears when we explicitly develop the relativistic Schrödinger equation and compare it with the non-relativistic one.
